Leviathan is a book written by Thomas Hobbes and published in 1651. It presents a political philosophy that argues for a strong, centralized government as the only way to prevent the state of nature, in which life is "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short." The book is structured as an extended metaphor, in which the state is compared to a giant sea monster, the Leviathan, that is created through a social contract among individuals who surrender their natural rights to a sovereign authority. Hobbes' ideas had a significant impact on modern political thought, particularly on theories of social contract and the role of government in society.
